3126 Athletics Member Highlight: Mike
Everyone say hello to Mr. February!! Or as the rest of us know him, Mr. Mike!! Mike is EASILY the most energetic person in the box. If you don’t have some energy, stand next to Mike and you’ll get some through osmosis. Better yet, be his partner in a partner WOD and you’ll work harder than you had originally planned that day! We’ll let Mike take it from here:
“3126 Athletics has made working out fun again! It’s more than that just pushing weights or doing a bunch of high intensity exercises though …. its a way of life now and the 3126 Athletics community in Martensville is where I feel a sense of belonging and purpose.
My 3126 Athletics journey started roughly 2 years ago. I was a die hard ball hockey player in the SBHL and worked out 2-3 days a week at a local gym. I was fit and active, but I still wanted a way to improve my fitness and get to that next level. I had heard only good things about 3126 Athletics and how it would benefit every aspect of my life and improve my fitness levels. During this time, I moved from Saskatoon to Martensville with my little family.
I had to find a new gym to workout at. A new 3126 Athletics gym was opening up in Martensville (3126 Athletics) and I decided to give it a go (even though it was way more money than I have ever payed before for a monthly gym membership, after starting and getting the coaching and progress I totally see the value in the cost).
After my first month or so doing 3126 Athletics, I found I broke through several plateaus and reached new levels of fitness that I couldn’t accomplish in 6 months at a standard gym. The workouts were always different and it was fun competitive atmosphere that cultivated results. I made several friends already enjoyed coming to class. I started out coming 2 days a week, then it quickly became 3 days a week, then slowly 4 days a week.
I was now spending almost more time at 3126 Athletics then ball hockey. I had to make a choice of whether I wanted to continue playing ball hockey competitively or jump into 3126 Athletics full time. It was a tough choice at first, but I decided I was getting way more benefit by going to 3126 Athletics then playing in the SBHL. To this day, I don’t regret my decision, and 3126 Athletics is my new sport. I really enjoy challenging myself every day to push harder and reach new levels. It was great winning the 3126 Athletics Wodathan this past year as it showed me how far I have come since I have started. This year, my goals are to finish in the top 75 in Saskatchewan for the Crossfit Open, qualify and go to the CanWest Games and who knows … someday make Regionals.
I currently workout 5-6 days a week and now starting to incorporate more strength training into my weekly training. Powerlifting on Sundays will be huge for me to reach that next level. I love doing light weight and high intensity workouts like Filthy Fifty, Fight Gone Bad or Cindy … but now I’m learning to work on my weaknesses (which is lifting heavy). I know I have a long ways to go yet, but thats the joy of it as well. There is always something to work on and improve at. Its fun working out hard with everyone, but its also fun playing and chilling with everyone after a WOD as well. Playing spike ball with the guys is always a blast and the potlucks we have are second to none.”
